Dam Failure

While catastrophic dam failures are extremely rare, being unprepared can cost you your life. If you live downstream from a dam, review these tips and action steps.

q       Be familiar with evacuation routes and know how to find higher ground.

q       If your area has sirens, listen for siren instructions and be prepared to self-evacuate after a severe earthquake whether you hear the siren or not.

q       Have a family plan that includes the name and telephone number of someone you can notify of your whereabouts outside the area, school plans for evacuation, and any special arrangements for the disabled, elderly, or very young.

q       Prepare your own “Grab & Go” kit by filling a backpack, or other easy to carry bag, with essential items such as a portable radio with extra batteries, drinking water, flashlight, pen and paper, medications, and a whistle.

q       Listen to emergency instructions on the radio during and after a disaster.

q       Use common sense and try to stay calm.

q       Stay safe and you can help others!
