Hazardous Material Release

Hazardous materials are everywhere. They can be found in chemical plants, refineries, factories, warehouses, and even in your home. If an accidental release occurs, you can protect yourself by learning how to shelter in place.

Hazardous materials are substances that pose a potential risk to life, health, or the environment if they are released. The material could be in the form of a liquid, gas, powder, or solid.

A hazardous material release can range from a chemical spill on a highway to a gas release at a factory. Frequently, there will be an unusual odor, but not always. Depending on the substance and situation, you may be advised to either evacuate or shelter in place.

Shelter in Place

“Shelter in Place” is a term for one of the best ways to protect you from a cloud of hazardous materials if an evacuation is not recommended or practical. When advised to shelter in place, follow these measures:

q       Immediately go indoors.

q       Shut off heaters and air conditioning.

q       Seal doors and windows with duct tape and wet towels.

q       If you smell the hazardous material, cover your nose and mouth with a wet cloth.

q       Do not call 9-1-1 for information. Call 9-1-1 for emergencies only.

q       Listen to news radio stations KVEN 1450 AM, KHAY 100.7 FM or KMLA 103.7 FM (Spanish).

q       Wait for an “All Clear” notification from a news radio station or Police or Fire personnel.

q       When given the “All Clear,” you may open windows and doors and go outside.
