Help Prevent a Power Outage

The most important thing we can do to help avoid power outages while California continues to experience electricity shortages is to reduce our demand.

q       Turn It Off

Turn off unneeded lights, equipment and appliances.

q       Minimize Your Energy Use

Minimize your energy use during peak demand hours from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m., and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

q       Use energy saving settings

Turn computers, copiers and other business equipment to their energy saving setting.

q       Appliances

Avoid running large appliances, such as washers, dryers and electric ovens, during peak demand hours.

q       Turn Thermostats Down

Turn thermostats down to 68 degrees or below.  Reduce settings to 55 degrees before going to bed or when you are away for the day.

q       Close the shades

Close the shades or drapes to avoid heat loss during the night and reduce air conditioning needs during the day.

q       Buy Energy Star

Buy Energy Star appliances, products and lights.

q       Check the Insulation in Your Home

Poor insulation will cause your house to be colder in the winter and hotter in the summer.  By improving the insulation in your home, you can save energy and reduce your energy bills.

Preparing For a Power Outage

A power outage can occur as a single event or as a result of an earthquake or storm.  In either case, being prepared will make your life much more comfortable while you wait for the lights to come on.

q       Driving

If the power goes out and traffic signals are not working, you need to stop at all intersections, look both ways and only proceed when it is safe.  Be extra alert since normal traffic patterns will be disrupted.  Also, use extra caution when approaching a railroad crossing.

q       Become Informed

Obtain information from your electric company regarding their policies and procedures for accidental power outages as well as electric power shortages.

If you lose power, use a battery operated radio to obtain information, and remember to store extra batteries.

q       Flashlights

Make sure you always have a flashlight and extra batteries in an easily accessible location.

q       Alarms

If you have a burglar or fire alarm that depends on electricity, make sure you have a back up system in place.

q       Telephones

Remember that cordless phones will not work if the electricity is off.  A hard-wired or cell phone will be necessary to call for emergency help if needed.

q       Food

If the power goes out, avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer as much as possible.  Food inside should stay cold for hours if the door is left closed.

q       Help Others

Be a good neighbor.  Help others stay safe during a power outage and check on those who may need help or comfort.
