Build it Smart Ventura County

"Smart building" covers everything from how energy-efficient your water heater is to how easy it is to walk to the nearest bus stop. It means making smart decisions to save money, save energy, stay healthy, and live more comfortably while also protecting resources for future generations. "Smart" projects have happened all over Ventura County - from residential remodels to agricultural greenhouses, downtown redevelopments to the County’s own Government Center.

NaCo Green Government Initiative

The County of Ventura is a member of the National Association of Counties that provides Green Government Initiative programs to its members. This program provides comprehensive resources for local governments on all things green, including energy, air quality, transportation, water quality, land use, purchasing and recycling. NACo serves as a catalyst between local governments and the private sector to facilitate green government best practices, products and policies that result in financial and environmental savings.

  • Pest and rodent control
  • Landscape maintenance

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program

IMP is the decision-making process for managing pests that reduces the amount of health and environmental risks. It encompasses the use of mechanical, biological and green chemical treatment methods to reduce the amount of harmful substances introduced to the system.

The County of Ventura has demonstrated a leadership in the successful implementation and use of an IPM Program. With a goal of utilizing the most environmentally sensitive approach possible to both plant and pest management, we have reduced the application of pesticides and poisons. Better planning, better pest management and choosing specific over systematic have allowed us to create such a drastic improvement.

Environmentally Preferable Products

Environmentally Preferable Products (EPP) are products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. Such products or services may include, but are not limited to, those which contain recycled content, minimize waste, conserve energy or water, and reduce the amount of toxics disposed or consumed.

Surplus Property Virtual Warehouse

In order to maximize the internal reuse of County assets, GSA Procurement has implemented a Surplus Property Virtual Warehouse that offers online viewing and request of surplus items from the intranet! Authorized County of Ventura and Ventura County Superintendent of Schools employees may view and select surplus items without leaving the comfort of their offices.

To further increase reuse and recycling efforts, if the item is not claimed for internal use after 14 days, it is made available to the general public, including County employees not directly involved with surplus operations or having privileged knowledge about an item.
