The Department of Animal Services serves a dual role in that we are tasked with protecting the animals of Ventura County from the actions of cruel, neglectful and irresponsible people and of protecting the people of Ventura County from dangerous, vicious and destructive animals.

We provide services that include the impounding of: stray animals; pickup and treatment of sick and injured strays; wildlife that is presenting a traffic hazard, public nuisance or health risk; stray and unwanted livestock or fowl; nuisance animal investigations; bite investigations and quarantines; license sales and rabies vaccination clinics; euthanasia and disposal services; pickup of dead animals (except livestock) and assistance with animal evacuations during disasters. We do not provide spaying and neutering, kennel services, microchip services or veterinary care to the general public.

At our Camarillo Shelter we house impounded stray, abandoned, lost and homeless animals and provide veterinary care, housing and board while the animals await reclaim or adoption. Adoption and reclaim of animals is available during public Counter Hours.

Our telephone operators are available between 7am and 6pm Monday through Friday, and between 8am and 4pm on weekends (Phone Numbers 1-888-223-PETS or (805) 388-4341) to answer questions, accept requests for service or receive animal related complaints. Our public counter hours are quite different, and we suggest you go to Hours of Operation for details.

Animal Control Officers are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond to animal related emergencies. They can be reached at (805) 388-4341 or 1-888-223-PETS. There are always kennel attendants on duty at the main animal Shelter in Camarillo to care for the impounded animals and to receive animals from the public. Animals should not be taken to the Simi Holding facility after-hours as it may be 10 to 12 hours before an attendant comes on duty.
