The January 17, 1994 Northridge Earthquake did considerable damage to Piru’s downtown. Eight of the community’s commercial buildings were red tagged. The remaining two were yellow tagged. In response to the damage that occurred, and by the authority of California Redevelopment Law, the Piru Redevelopment Agency was formed in 1995. The Piru Area Redevelopment Project Plan was also adopted by the Board of the Ventura County Redevelopment Agency at this time. The primary objective of the Plan is to stimulate economic recovery through redevelopment of damaged, stagnated and improperly utilized areas of the community.
This Project Area totals 220 acres and encompasses the unincorporated community of Piru located approximately six miles east of the City of Fillmore within the Santa Clara River Valley in eastern Ventura County. The Project Area boundaries are generally defined by State Highway 126 on the south, Main Street and Piru Canyon Road on the north, Main Street and Camulos Road on the east and Center Street on the west.
