The Ventura River Watershed is a coastal watershed located in the northwestern portion of Ventura County. The watershed covers 228 square miles roughly half of which is on Forest Service land (USFS, 1997).
The Ventura River has several major tributaries including Matilija, North Fork Matilija, San Antonio and Canada Larga. Lake Casitas serves as the primary water supply for the area within the Watershed. The Rincon and Hall/Arundell Watersheds are grouped together with the Ventura River Watershed.
The Ventura River Watershed Council was formed in May of 2006 as a coalition of stakeholders addressing critical issue in the watershed. This Council serves as the stakeholder group for a variety of local watershed planning efforts, including the development of the Integrated Regional Water Management Plan under Props. 50 and 84, development of the Watershed Protection Plan funded by Prop. 50, development of project ideas for IRWM Implementation Grant (Prop. 50 and 84) funds, and future development of a watershed management plan. Meetings are typically held monthly at Ventura City Hall on the fourth Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. For a complete list of agendas and meeting dates click here.
