REVERSE 911® in the County of Ventura
REVERSE 911® is a telephonic community notification system that may be used to deliver outbound messages in the event of an emergency. The system employs a combination of database and mapping technologies to allow emergency responders to pinpoint a specific geographic area and deliver the appropriate message to residents in the affected area. The system has the ability to call both listed and unlisted phone numbers. If a phone line is busy, the system has the ability to redial the number to make contact. If an answering machine picks up the call, the system has the ability to leave the emergency message on the answering machine.
It is important for residents not to rely on REVERSE 911® notifications as their only means of emergency information. The Sheriff’s Department intends to use the system in conjunction with information provided to the media, directions given by emergency responders, and information posted on official city, county and government websites. Registration on the website cannot guarantee residents will receive notification due to the unforeseen problems that such an emergency could create.
Register Your Cellular, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), or TTY (Teletypewriter) Phone Number*
Cellular or VoIP phone numbers are not currently in the system database. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phones are those that provide voice service over the internet and may be offered by your cable service provider or other companies such as Vonage. While TTY phone numbers may be in the database, the Office of Emergency Services does not know which phone numbers are TTY compatible. If you would like to be contacted on your cellular, VoIP, or TTY telephone, you must register your number. Please note that the service is for Ventura County businesses and residences. Calls regarding property or situations outside the County are not covered. While phone numbers can be outside of Ventura County service, you must enter a valid address within the boundaries of Ventura County to be eligible for the service. The Office of Emergency Services will contact you annually via your e-mail address to verify that the phone information is still valid. If the phone number is not confirmed it will be removed from the database.
The system can be used to deliver alerts when there is a threat to the public health or safety of residents in the cities of Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, and the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. The Cities of Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks, and Ventura have opted not to participate in the County’s REVERSE 911® System. They have their own community notification systems capable of alerting residents. Please contact them for further information.
*You will be charged the standard fee from your phone provider for receiving the emergency alerts. Ventura County is not responsible for any charges that may be incurred as a result of receiving these alerts.
