Periodically we all find ourselves in situations where we are temporarily unable to provide care and housing for our pets. While many people are able to place their animals with trusted friends, relatives or neighbors, others are not so fortunate. Many people have no one, except their pet, that they can turn to. Realizing the importance that pets play in all of our lives, The Ventura County Department of Animal Regulation has developed a program that can assist pet owners in times of temporary displacement.

Upon referral by one of a number of public or private service agencies, animals belonging to persons being temporarily removed or detained from their usual living arrangement can have their pet cared for at no cost to the animal owner. Typically, these referrals are made due to hospitalization, incarceration, emergency relocation, or institutionalization. Occasionally, it is nothing more than the need for a low-income senior citizen to travel out of town for several days to attend the funeral of a loved one. Whatever the reason, we are ready to offer assistance when possible.

Basically, what we offer is up to 30 days board and care at the County Animal Shelter in Camarillo, for pets belonging to people meeting specific criteria. Obviously, animals thrive better in their own surroundings and every effort should be made to provide for them at home prior to applying for our assistance. Besides referral by a case worker or other legitimate service provider, the animal owner must agree to terms that may include purchase of an appropriate license, agreement to allow for the provision of veterinary medical treatment, periodic visitation of the pet etc. Longer stays can be arranged as the situation dictates.
