October 22, 2009-The promising future of a Boating Instruction and Safety Center (BISC) at Channel Islands Harbor took a significant step forward this week. The County Board of Supervisor’s approved unanimously a lease with the California State University Channel Islands to operate the facility. The BISC will be available to the University, the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, community colleges, public schools, community groups, and the general public. The University is also planning to work with the Oxnard Police Activities League and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oxnard and Port Hueneme to provide free sailing/boating classes at the center to low-income children.

August 4, 2009-
Another barrier to the creation of farmworker housing in Ventura County was removed during the Board of Supervisor’s meeting today. Supervisor Kathy Long voted to approve an agriculture zoning ordinance amendment that reduces the minimum lot size needed for a farmworker housing development from 40 acres to 10 acres. The reduction of the minimum lot size is a welcomed change and helps remove barriers in creating needed workforce housing sites. As a strong workforce housing proponent, Supervisor Long’s actions today continues to validate recommendations proposed by the Farmworker Housing Committee, a group of workforce housing advocates, agriculture and business representatives formed by the Board in 2001 to quantify the county’s farmworker housing needs and make recommendations.

July 1, 2009-
Supervisor Long joined the Board of Supervisors in authorizing the Environmental Health Division to resume the Ocean Water Quality Monitoring Program. This program’s re-authorization is timely. It will help keep us aware of the water's conditions and give all residents the confidence to enjoy our Ventura County oceans this summer. Sampling results will be available beginning July 1, 2009 through a telephone hotline at 805/662-6555 or on the program’s web page.

April 21, 2009- Supervisor Kathy Long voted to accept funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), a part of President Obama’s Economic Stimulus Funding Program, for the construction of a required upgrade to the Piru Wastewater Treatment Plant.  The ARRA funding package includes an $8.55 million subsidy and a $5.55 million loan to be paid back at 1.0% interest rate over 30 years.  “Because we were able to get the ARRA funding, we will not need to increase the sewer service charge at this time.  This is a great benefit to the Piru community because, without this funding, sewer rates could have been increased to as much as $95.00, per residence, per month,” said Supervisor Kathy Long.
