Open Date Small shops are promising they will rid you/your child/your family/etc. of head lice. A report states that none of the products they use or sell has been proven to repel or kill head lice. They manually remove lice and nits from the hair during sessions at the salon. This “nit-picking” is productive, but they will only guarantee their services if every member of the immediate family is treated. At one salon the cost of a family of four to be “louse-free” was about $900.

A recent publication states that you can get good results at home. Combing hair carefully with specific head lice removal combs can be an effective method of getting rid of head lice. See: Speare, R. Canyon, D., Cahill, C., & G. Thomas. 2007. Comparative efficacy of two nit combs in removing head lice (Pediculus humanus var. capitis) and their eggs. International Journal of Dermatology. 46: 1275-1278.
